Chapter 19 is on the spiritual elders Saint Silouan and Father Sophrony
Saint Silouan drew a sharp distinction between the notion of legal responsibility and the love of Christ, which sees ‘ nothing strange, but rather something entirely natural, in sharing the guilt of those we love, and even in assuming full responsibility for their wrong-doing’: something that does away with any notion of self-justification. All this was the result of the saint’s experience of prayer, on which Father Sophrony commented: ‘ Intense prayer, my Father Silouan’s, for the world leads to an awareness of the ontological community between one’s personal existence and the existence of all mankind’.
