Essentially what He taught was that doing God’s will was not a simple matter of compliance with laws, but rather of obedience and love, of heartfelt conversion.

Their [the disciples] righteousness must be greater than that of the old teachers [scribes and pharisees] , many of whom no doubt complied with its requirements [of the law].
