Modern Orthodox Thinkers:
From the Philokalia to the Present Day

I have really enjoyed The Origins of the Christian Mystical Tradition: From Plato to Denys by Andrew Louth, so I thought I would read his presentation on Modern Orthodox Thinkers, as an overview, and fill in for those I don’t know much about. I have been reading this fantastic book for a few months, a few pages a day.  It  presents twenty important figures in Modern Orthodoxy. It’s actually the revised version of public lectures given by the author in the years 2012-2014.

The book has a good balance between the scholarly dimension, philosophical, theological, and spiritual input.
The author starts by explaining his goal in writing this book and his choice of authors presented.

Each presentation is about 12-15 pages long, and contains good references to know more. So I end up with a good list of other books I want to read now!!

I will just enumerate the chapters here, with a few notes I took in each, and references to books I want to read. These are mostly personal notes, but I thought you might get something out of them as well.

Chapter 1 is about The Philokalia and its influence.

• The last paragraph page 3 is a great presentation of the Philokalia

• I also enjoyed the first paragraph page 8 on sobonost

• From this chapter I also got an incentive to read the Optina Fathers!
